Meteora 12-hour private tour; Discover the astounding rock formations of Meteora, an otherworldly destination in Greece. These sandstone peaks, seemingly inaccessible, have been home to monks and nuns since the 11th century. Explore the Meteora thrones, which are monasteries perched atop these towering cliffs. Visit this extraordinary place and witness the unique fusion of natural beauty and spiritual significance.

Meteora, meaning ‘suspended in the air’ in Greek, perfectly sums up these notable Greek Orthodox monasteries. Remarkably, 24 of these monasteries were built during the 15th century despite significant challenges, coinciding with the significant resurgence of the eremetic ideal. Currently, only six of them are visitable!

Meteora

Meteora

Stop At: Meteora monasteries are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. The area of Meteora-Antichassia is also part of the Natura 2000 network, which protects specific rare plant and animal species. In the past, these colossal rocks, rising over 600 meters high with stunning landscapes, hosted one of Greece’s most significant monastic communities.

Meteora, a remarkable rock formation in Greece, is home to a collection of Eastern Orthodox monasteries. This complex holds historical significance, ranking second only to Mount Athos. Six monasteries stand tall on massive natural pillars and rounded boulders, forming prominent landmarks in the region. Currently, a small community of monks and nuns reside in these monasteries, preserving the legacy of this unique architectural accomplishment.

The 6 monasteries of Meteora

  • The Monastery of Great Meteoron. It is the biggest of the Meteorite monasteries.
  • The  Monastery of Varlaam is the second, after the Great Meteoro, big in size monastery.
  • The Monastery of Rousanou. It is dedicated to ‘The Transfiguration’ but honored to Saint Barbara.
  • The Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapausas. It is the first to meet on our way from Kastraki to Meteora.
  • The Monastery of St. Stephen. It is one of the most attainable as we don’t have to cope with innumerable stairs to reach it.
  • The Monastery of Holy Trinity is very difficult to reach. The visitor has to cross the valley and continue high up through the rock before we arrive outside the entrance.

During or after your visit, you can have your lunch break in a traditional homemade Greek restaurant offering local dishes, located at the foot of the high rocks in Kalambaka. The cost of the lunch is not included in the tour package. Discover the breathtaking beauty of Meteora, home to extraordinary landscapes and remarkable Byzantine monasteries. Perched atop soaring cliffs, these monasteries offer visitors a glimpse into the past through their priceless artifacts and exquisite wall paintings.
