As we make our way to the Panathenaic Stadium, we’ll pause to capture some pictures. This renowned site holds great significance as it was the birthplace of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Known as the “Kalimarmaro,” this stadium is a standout among Athens’ many historic landmarks, being the only one constructed entirely of marble. Its origins date back to 330 BC when the statesman Lykourgos (Lycurgus) commissioned the construction of a grand stadium for the purpose of hosting the prestigious Panathenaic Games.

The stadium was the impressive location for both the inaugural and final ceremonies of the initial modern Olympic games in 1896. And more than a century later, in 2004, it once again proudly served as an esteemed Olympic setting.
